New MEGA collector project completed

Just five months after the first successfully completed project in Graz, the second large delivery of MEGA collectors has now been transported to its destination and installed. The first MEGA collector system in Graz feeds the thermal energy into a district and district heating network. The second project, however, utilizes the yields of the solar thermal large system in combination with a heat-driven, power-free refrigeration machine to cool a newly built greenhouse.

The new research greenhouse in the Botanical Garden Leipzig is part of the German Centre for Integrative Biodiversity Research Halle-Jena-Leipzig. The new building consists of twelve cabins, several laboratories, and other technical rooms. It aims to find more innovative solutions for energy savings and explore whether it is possible to preserve the biological diversity of our planet. The completion is scheduled for October 2018.

The MEGA collector used in this project, manufactured by the Uckermark-based company AKOTEC, is aptly named, as it was specifically developed for large process heat plants as well as district and district heating networks. With this collector, it is possible to install collector areas of up to 500 m² on a pipeline with minimal piping effort. Additionally, the collectors come with an integrated overheat protection. Standardly, the tubes are physically limited to 120°C, but upon request, they can be set between 120°C and 160°C.

Segments measuring 13 m² are manufactured in Angermünde. These are fully pre-assembled and are screwed together on-site with quick couplings to form a large collector. The advantages of the new MEGA collector are clear: short piping distances, thus minimal heat losses and more output. Added to this are the low installation costs, as the detailed segmentation of pipe connections is no longer necessary.
